Extra Curricular Activities
Band
5-8 graders are eligible to participate in band. For students new to
their instrument, we have Prep band, and for more experienced
players we have Varsity band. Large group band practice takes place
before school from 8 a.m.-9 a.m. once a week. Also, band students
have small group lessons during the school day once a week.
Athletics
Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to participate in athletics. Our
Cheer
Team
practices, competes, and cheers at student games and events throughout
the year. Saint Ambrose also offers fall volleyball and soccer.
Basketball is available in the winter, and in the spring we offer
track, softball and baseball.
Junior Great Books
The goal of the Junior Great Books program is to expose children to
great
pieces of literature and encourage appreciation of the works through
active
discussion. At St. Ambrose there are two distinct Great Books
programs.
In 1st grade, all students experience the activity during the
regular school
day; parent volunteers come with prepared lesson plans and read the
story to
their assigned group (4 students), discuss it briefly, and guide the
children through a related art or acting activity.
Students in grades 2 through 5 have the option to sign up for a
Great Books
group before school. These discussion groups meet for six weeks,
8:15 to
9:00, during Oct./Nov. and again during Feb./Mar.
Choir
Interested students participate in school liturgies through song.
This opportunity is available for students in kindergarten through
8th grades.

Math
Masters
Math Masters is an advanced Math Competition open to interested
qualifying students from 5th and 6th grade. Students are able to
request a preparation
packet in Dec., work independently on challenging math problems for
several weeks, and take a team qualifying test in the spring. The
highest scorers
on that test will meet with the enrichment coordinator weekly to
prepare for the regional Math Masters meet - a one time competition
held at Lakeville
High School.
Academic Triathlon
Academic Triathlon is an opportunity for 5th through 8th grade
students to use their academic and creative skills in a competitive
setting. Once a month
from Dec. through Mar. students compete on teams of five against
other area schools. At the meets teams move between three events:
"Face Off" - a quiz bowl type question and answer session, "Mind
Sprints" - mental/physical brainteasers, and "P.A.R.T.Y." -
preparation and presentation of short skits.
