Religion
Catholic Schools are
different than other types of schools because they are founded on
and supported by the guiding principles of the Catholic faith.
Unlike other school environments, these principles can be interwoven
throughout the curriculum -- providing a foundation upon which the
faith lives of the students can be built. These principles and
values are demonstrated not only through a formal religion
curriculum, but through prayer in the classroom, worshipping as a
community at school liturgies, incorporating
parents as active participants in the child's faith development and
using Christian values to solve disagreements between children.
At Saint Ambrose of Woodbury we believe faith formation is
accomplished as a community, and is a lifelong process. Therefore,
the philosophy statement for the religion curriculum at Saint
Ambrose of Woodbury is a statement that describes faith formation
for all children in the parish:
Religion curriculum philosophy statement
Grounded in the Eucharist, we, the Saint Ambrose of Woodbury
Catholic Community, will support adults and young people in the
process of lifelong faith formation. We strive to nurture, teach and
encourage ways to recognize and incorporate the presence of God into
our daily life experiences. We do this by Proclaiming the Word,
Worshiping together and reaching out in Service to one another. We
study the teachings and celebrate the richness of our identity as a
Catholic Christian community in response to our call to
discipleship.

Texts and materials
In 2006, we adopted the Blest Are We (2004) series published
by Silver Burdett Ginn. This series aligns with the religion
standards established by the Archdiocese of St. Paul and
Minneapolis. Our family life curriculum is taught in grades 3-8. The
text used is Harcourt Religion Publisher’s Growing in Love
(2001).
Sacramental preparation
At Saint Ambrose of Woodbury we will take a parish-wide view of
sacramental preparation for Reconciliation and First Eucharist. That
is, the program within the school will be in partnership with the
Faith Formation program. A study of the sacraments will be part of
the classroom curriculum, but will also incorporate a strong family
component in which parents work with their children in the
preparation process.
Other faith experiences
In addition to religious education that occurs in the classroom,
students will be active participants in liturgical experiences.
These experiences will include: sectional Masses once a month (K-2,
3-5 or 6-8); all-school Mass once a month; reconciliation services
twice a year; classroom prayer; service opportunities within our
community and to the community at large.
